An out-of-plane load applied to a bracket will cause a simultaneous tensile and shear load to be applied to the bolts. The following equations will help size fasteners for respective load cases.

💡
Increasing Lx or decreasing Lz will result in a lower stress through the bolts
💡
Minimum edge distance for bolt holes should be 1.25D minimum

Tensile force in each bolt

P = Applied Force, N_y = Number of bolts in 'y' direction

Shear force in each bolt

P = Applied Force, N_b = Number of bolts

Tensile stress in each bolt

F_t = Tensile force in bolt, A_s = stress area for bolt size

Shear stress in each bolt

F_s = Shear force in bolt, A_s = stress area for bolt size

Values of stress area for specific bolt sizes can be found on our Sizing Fasteners guide
