Built by Engineers.
For Engineers.
The Engineering Notebook was created to bridge the gap between classroom theory and the realities of modern engineering design. It’s a place for engineers who want to learn how real engineering is done — from concept to CAD to the finished part.
We teach the principles that define great engineering: design intent, manufacturability, and precision. Every guide, chart, and article is written to help you think and work like an engineer who builds for performance and reliability, not just for simulation.

🚀 From a Dream of F1 to a Life in Design
My name is Ryan Manvill, and I’ve been obsessed with engineering and Formula 1 since I was five years old — ever since I watched Damon Hill win the world championship in 1996. That moment sparked a lifelong fascination with the craft and competitiveness of motorsport.
Today, I’m proud to have turned that childhood dream into a career. I currently work as a Lead Concept Engineer for the Cadillac F1 Team, and previously as a Mechanical and Composite Design Engineer at Alpine F1 and Red Bull Advanced Technologies. Before F1 I worked as Design Engineer at Babcock International, working on submarine launch and weapon systems.
My experience spans everything from composite structures and mechanical assemblies to hydraulic systems and chassis architecture — the kind of work where every detail matters and every gram counts.
I have been fortunate to have exceptional mentors who have shaped how I think, design, and problem-solve. I want to pass that learning on to you!
⚙️ Why The Engineering Notebook Exists
I built The Engineering Notebook to share those lessons with the next generation of engineers — especially those chasing the same dreams I once had. Whether you’re in Formula Student, starting your first job, or refining your skills as a designer, this site exists to help you connect the dots between university theory and industry practice.
Our growing collection of resources, design guides, and AI tools are designed to:
- Help you understand not just what to design, but why.
- Build your confidence in real-world mechanical and composite design.
- Prepare you for the pace, pressure, and precision of professional motorsport engineering.
